Hayato Gokudera as seen in the anime

Gokudera was born in Italy and is 3/4 Italian and 1/4 (mother) Japanese. His blood type is B, is 168cm tall, weighs 54kg and his hair is silver. His future dream is to become the tenth's right-hand man. He has an ability to play the piano. He dislikes people that are older than him, Bianchi and Adult Lambo.[1]

At school, Hayato is adored by many of the female classmates who view him as the "rebellious badboy." During Valentine's Day, a large group of females constantly followed him around trying to give him chocolate, although Hayato seemed to be more annoyed than flattered by this. Despite his image of a rebel, Hayato excels in his schoolwork and aces all his tests, much to the surprise of Tsuna. This is probably due to his rich upbringing, suggesting that he probably had a multitude of private tutors when he was young. He idolizes Tsuna greatly and considers himself to be Tsuna's right-hand man. In the manga he is a chain-smoker; often he uses his cigarettes to light his dynamite.

History

Due to a traumatic childhood experience, every time he sees the face of his older sister, Bianchi, he becomes sick, sometimes even falling unconscious. Oddly enough, he is immune to his sister when she happens to be wearing something that covers part of her face (i.e. glasses or goggles).

When he was younger, he was a talented pianist. However, he soon grew tired of playing after his 'trauma', and instead, decided to join the Mafia. Unfortunately, since he was considered to be a mere pianist, no one wanted to accept him into their family; the fact that he was an oriental half-breed lessened his chances of finding a willing Mafia family to take him in. To become stronger, he sought advice from Dr. Shamal, who, at the time, was working for his family. Hayato seemed to have looked up to Shamal, to the point that Shamal believed Hayato to have copied his hairstyle, and even wanted to learn his assassination technique, the Trident Mosquito. Instead, Shamal taught him how to use dynamites, which caused Hayato's fascination with explosives, eventually choosing them as his main weapons.

In the future arc, more was revealed of Gokudera's past. He and Bianchi are actually half siblings, born by different mothers. Bianchi's mother was married to their father but Gokudera's was a woman with whom he had an affair. Gokudera's mother was a young, beautiful woman and a very talented pianist, whom their father fell in love with at first sight. Not long after, they became involved and the woman bore a child. However, in the mafia, illegitimate children are not tolerated, and everyone was told that Gokudera Hayato was actually from the same mother as Bianchi.

His real mother was allowed to see him three times a year until he was three, when she was killed after driving off a cliff on her way to see her son. It was probably not an accident, because, as Reborn says, "It slid off the road at an impossible location. It's been said that there weren't even tire marks. It was instant death." Suicide was considered, but she had been looking forward to that day and had even brought a present for the young Gokudera. Gokudera himself was unaware of what had happened until he was eight. He had overheard some servants gossiping and fled the mansion the day following.

Plot Overview

Daily Life Arc

Hayato "tests" Tsuna's worthiness for becoming the heir to the Vongola Family. Hayato becomes the first member of Tsuna's "family" after Tsuna goes into Dying Will Mode to save both of them from Hayato's wayward dynamite. After this, Hayato becomes fiercely loyal to Tsuna, referring to him as "boss" or "10th", and admires Tsuna to the point of extremes. Hayato would often get angry at Takeshi because he does not want him to get too close to Tsuna. He sometimes gets jealous since Takeshi is usually around Tsuna.

Although his loyalty to Tsuna is unquestionable, the IX boss tested Hayato anyways. The IX needed to be sure that he was going to be a good and reliable subordinate to Tsuna, as Hayato was known as being unreliable and untamed. Hayato passes the IX's "test" and escapes its penalty, death. Even though Hayato does not know of his close brush with death, the experience renews his commitment to Tsuna, and creates a much more solid bond between them as friends.

Hayato also participates in many different comedic events as Reborn 'trains' Tsuna to become the tenth boss of the Vongola family.

Kokuyo Gang arc

Hayato was instrumental in the Arc. He is the first character in the manga shown engaged in a plot-relevant battle. He later adds raw power to the team Reborn gathers to invade Kokuyo Land.

List Countdown

After his phone dies at school, Hayato leaves and decides to grab a bite to eat before going home. At the shopping district, he is confronted by Chikusa, and after he attacks two passersby with deadly precision, Hayato recognizes him as a professional assassin. after a heated battle, Hayato believes he's won when he manages to trick Chikusa into perceiving his mini-bombs and regular bombs as the same size, landing a pivotal hit and then finishing him off with a round of dynamite. Howver, when Tsuna arrives, who previously couldn't contact Hayato becuase his phone was dead, Chikusa stikes at Tsuna, forcing Hayato to take the brunt of his attack, and felling him.

Kokuyo Land Invasion

Hayato joins Tsuna, Takeshi, Bianchi, and Reborn for the assault on the enemy base. He is forced to stick to watching all the courtyard battles. including Takeshi's battle with Ken, Bianchi's with M.m., and Tsuna's with Lanchia. However, when the group sans Takeshi makes it into the main building, they are confronted by Chikusa. Again Gokudera does battle with him, allowing the others to escape. At first it looks like the battle is in his favor. But then the Trident mosquito side affects kick in again, at which point Ken is able to strike a debilitating blow from behind. Hayato stumbles and falls down a flight of stairs. He realizes he's too beat up to continue, but then hears one of Birds' birds singing the Nami-Middle song and frees Hibari.

Mukuro Face-off

Hayato is carried to the main battle area by Hibari, he then reveals that Shamal gave him a placebo to give to Hibari (After Hibari's fought of course). He is tricked by Bianchi into getting stabbed with the blade of Mukuro's Trident. At which point Mukuro took him over. Mukuro engages Tsuna with his Hayato's body, correctly asuming that Tsuna will not use force to defeat them as he did with Mukuro-Chikusa, and Mukuro-Ken. Tsuna disrupts his plan by absorbing the blows and knocking both unconscious.

The Varia arc

He is the Guardian of the Storm

Storm Ring and the Vongola Coat of Arms

In the Ring Tournament, Hayato was pitted against the genius Belphegor for the Storm Ring in the Storm Ring Battle. At first, he had trouble figuring out Bel's attacks and tricks, but Hayato was later able to turn the tides in his favor and defeat him. However, as he was taking the ring from Bel's supposedly unconscious body, Bel tackled Hayato to the ground in attempt to steal both of the rings. A struggle for the rings ensued, but only lasted for a short time, as Tsuna convinced Hayato not to risk his life - the area they were in had large explosives timed to go off very shortly. When the explosives went off, both Hayato and Belphegor survived, but because Hayato had abandoned the rings, Belphegor was deemed the winner.

Future arc

Hayato invented his own writing system that he uses in the future arc called 'G-Script'. After Hayato was transported to the future, he decoded a note left by his future self written in this 'language'. After his brief visit to the new Vongola base in Japan, he was involved in a battle where he was the first of the to-the-future characters in the arc to open a box that transforms his Storm flame into a weapon, successfully defeating one of the Millefiore Family's Blackspell members. He receives a letter in the G-Script form his future self who is now in the past. It tells him that because they brought the Vongola rings to the future where they no longer exist they are temporarily stuck in the future. To return to the past Tsuna must gather the guardians, defeat Byakuran, kill the man with glasses (Irie Shouichi) and they will return.

Kyoko Search and Gamma Battle

The Family faced a huge problem when, just as Hibird showed up, giving them a chance at finding the strongest guardian, Kyoko went out to look for Ryohei. Tsuna decided that he and Lal were to look for Kyoko, and Hayato was to help Takeshi follow up on the Hibird lead. After tracking it all the way to where the signal went dead, right outside on Namimori Shrine, the two engage another Blackspell duo. Hayato makes it clear that they are both fighting separately, and they succeed in getting a victory. However, this is when Gamma of the Fake 6 Funeral Wreaths showed up.

He initially took Gamma on alone. Refusing to cooperate with Takeshi. Until he begins losing, which is when Takeshi intervenes and tells him that, as the right-hand man and leader of the guardians, it should be up to him to unite the guardians. Not distance himself from them. It hits home with Gokudera, but even when they strategize and work toegther, Gamma far outmatches them both. They suffer near-fatal defeat, that is, until Hibari shows up and saves them both.

Back to Training

After recovering and taking Yamamato's words about him being selfish to heart, Gokudera begins his training with his sister. At first he refused, however Bianchi offered him something that belonged to their father if he completed his training. She was merciless on him and was very disappointed at his lack of progress, especially after she gave him ring boxes his future self had left behind. He later escapes from her training and is not heard of again for some time.

When Tsuna searches for him after training he emerges with a new technique and, oddly enough, a wild cat on his head. The cat is revealed to be a box weapon that Gokudera couldn't bear to send him back to his box. His sister scolds him for this behavior and his skipping their training. However, he has been training on his own without her.

Melone Base

After setting out and reaching Melone Base along with Tsuna, Takeshi, Lal, and Ryohei, Hayato watches as Tsuna defeats Dendro Chilum with his newly perfected X-Burner. After Tsuna wins handily, he proceeds with the group to watch Lal face off against Ginger Bread. After defeating the magician's puppet, Hayato continues on with the group, even though he is reluctant to let tsuna be the decoy is Lal's place, and attempted to help him when he thought Tsuna was in danger.

After a while, an "earthquake" separates the group into Takeshi and Lal, and Gokudera and Ryohei. Not realzing that the base has been rearranged by Irie. He bears witness to Ryohei's fight against Baishana and is amazed at the future Ryohei's strength. After Irie shuffles the base around again, he fights and defeats Gamma with his Sistema C.A.I. and learns a bit about the Millefiore Family's history.

After exchanging one Final Flame Arrow with Gamma, it can be presumed that he was knocked out, as he woke up in a tube under the White Round Machine.

Back to Training II

Currently, Hayato was assigned by Dino to train Ryohei and Lambo on the usage of the Rings and Boxes. He succeeded in getting Lambo to open his Vongola Box. He is attacked by Ryohei's Kangaryuu, and is witness to Lambo's Box Weapon animal, which is a bull.

Choice

In the most recent chapter, Gokudera is standing to Tsuna's immediate right in full battle uniform(A suit and tie), ready for the big fight to begin.

Relationships

Bianchi

Bianchi is Gokudera's half-sister, although they have a difficult relationship. In the future arc Binachi reveals that their common parent is their father and Gokudera is an illegitimate child. Gokudera can't see her without becoming very ill. Bianchi later remedies this by wearing glasses, goggles, or anything that covers her face around him. Their strained relationship stems from their youth, when Bianchi would use Gokudera as a test subject for her latest poisonous creation.

Parents

Gokudera loved his mother very much, but she died in a car accident on the way to see him. It turned out that his father had her "taken care of" as she was his mistress and not his wife.

Gokudera had a bad relationship with his father. He was the boss of another mafia family and as Gokudera was his illegitimate child he paid less attention to him and favoured Bianchi, his legitimate child.

Tsuna

After being saved by Tsuna, Gokudera pledged his loyalty to Tsuna as the tenth boss of the Vongola family. He is fiercely loyal to him, but shows that he wants to be more than just his friend, not just his subordinate. This comes from Gokudera overhearing Tsuna and Reborn discussing their relationship. With this information, he became a better friend to Tsuna and turned down a promotion from the ninth (IX) boss that was actually a test to gauge his loyalty. When highly praising Tsuna, he is depicted as a dog sometimes.

Yamamoto

Gokudera sees Yamamoto as a rival for the position of Tsuna's right-hand man, and as such seems to dislike him intensely. He is also sometimes very jealous of him, of either his talent or his close relationship with Tsuna. Despite Gokudera's strained opinion, the two are friends and spend a lot of time together; Yamamoto often holds Gokudera back when he's upset or the two fight together as a team. Although he states that he hates Yamamoto, due to his all-around good-guy personality, he sees him as one of his few close friends. Gokudera seems to trust Yamamoto, enough to leave things to him and entrust Tsuna's safety to him.

Dr. Shamal

Gokudera met the good doctor when he was young. He wanted to be his apprentice, but was turned down. The doctor turned him on to his current form of attack, dynamite. Shamal also agreed to train him during the Varia Arc. Their relationship is strained, at best, but it could be viewed as similar to Tsuna's relationship with his father, as both the older men have only the best intentions for their younger counterparts.

Abilities

Gokudera is known as "Smokin' Bomb Hayato" (スモーキン・ボム 隼人, Sumōkin Bomu Hayato?), using dynamite as his signature weapon. During Gokudera's "dynamite maintenance", it is revealed that he carries huge amounts of dynamite on him at all times.

Bombs - Below is a list of what he's used during the series.

  • Double Bomb(Two-Times Bombs) - Double the bombs. First used against Tsuna.
  • Triple Bomb(Three-Times Bombs) - Triple the bombs. First used against Tsuna, perfected in the Storm Ring Battle against Belphegor.
  • Double Bomb with mini bombs
  • Bomb Sprays - First used against Hibari. Hayato throws a lot of bombs in close proximity to his opponent.
  • Rocket Bomb - First used against Bel. Rocket Bombs were meant to offset the fact that although all of Hayato's attacks were powerful, they were slow and inaccurate.

Originally, Gokudera's main weakness was the fact that although his bombs made a deadly weapon, it was difficult to pinpoint and calculate the exact distance between himself and his target and sync it with the amount of time it would take for the bombs to actually explode. In order to remedy this, during the Varia arc, Gokudera invented a new type of bombs accurately dubbed "Rocket Bombs." Each one, once thrown, causes the backside of the bombs to fire up and rocket towards his opponent like high-speed missiles, which then explode on impact. It was this technique, coupled with Gokudera's cunning that allowed him to match Belphegor.

As one of the Vongola families tenth generation guardians, and the guardian of the Vongola Ring of Storm, Gokudera has access to great power. In the Future Arc, his ring transforms into a specific weapon when combined with its ring boxes, also emitting its own Dying Will flame.

Sistema C.A.I.

Recently when training with Bianchi he receives two belts with five customized black skull ring boxes on them. These were left by his future self and are apparently part of The Sistema C.A.I. attack his future self developed and which his past self has completed it. The Sistema C.A.I. or Sistema Cambio Arma Istantaneo (lit. System Change Arms Instantaneous or Instantaneous Arms Change System in Italian) is a system of box weapons that utilize the flames that flow within his body. It runs on this principle: while everyone is aligned with one of the seven ring elements, in order to draw out the Dying Will Flame, a person will end up drawing other attribute flames that are weaker then the wielder's main attribute. Sistema C.A.I. is designed to use such weaker flames to utilize multiple rings to open and complement his storm-based element.

Flame Arrow - When combined with the box he received during his fight with the Black Spell, Gokudera's ring transforms into a metallic mini "cannon" with a skull at the end, and then attaches to his arm. So far the cannon has shown two abilities. By expelling a powerful gust of wind, the cannon can temporarily diffuse the Dying Will Flames of others. Aside from diffusing the flames it does no damage, however. The second ability, the more offensive one, allows the cannon to shoot a destructive explosive blast provided Gokudera loads dynamite into it. It communicates its needs through a projection of italian words. It is later revealed to be the main offensive weapon in the Sistema C.A.I. and gains new functions with each attribute.
- Rain: By coating the storm rockets with the Rain's Tranquility, enemy's flames are weakened, allowing the rockets to bypass the enemy's defense.
- Sun: The Sun's "activation" and high power output increases the speed of the storm rockets, creating a attack with an unpredictable acceleration.
- Cloud: The cannon fires one shot that spreads in a tree-diagram like fashion, due to Cloud's propagation, creating a wide spread attack that is difficult to avoid.
- Thunder: A solid beam, due to the lightning's solidification. Gokudera claims it is his strongest attack.
Uri - An Storm attribute animal box containing a wild cat (later revealed to be a baby leopard). At first seemingly useless, it is revealed that when charged with the Sun Flames "activation" he becomes a large, powerful leopard with skulls on his sides capable of taking on Gamma's full power Electtrico Vulip single handedly.

Gokudera also seems to have a knack for school and is quite intelligent; he even created his own code system which we see in the future arc (G-Script). These skills make him an excellent candidate to be Tsuna's right-hand man when he becomes the tenth boss of the Vongola. He also seems to be highly superstitious, knowing the chants for exorcism that he tries to use on Rokudo Mukuro during his possession of Bianchi. He also believes in modern legends like the Yeti and aliens invading the planet.
